Periodontal or Gum Disease

Oral hygiene is very important for our health and happiness. Yet, people are more likely to ignore problems in their mouth than other health problems, until they become serious. Though we may not want to address an oral health problem and hope that it will go away on its own, the smart move is to see a dentist. Periodontal Disease can affect more than just your teeth and gums. It has been linked to an increased risk of Uncontrolled Diabetes, Heart Disease, Stroke, Oral Cancer, Pregnancy Complications, Severe Osteopenia, Respiratory Infections, and even Alzheimer’s Dementia. With 75% of the United States population currently having some form of this disease, it is important to be examined by a dentist.

Let’s take a moment to answer the question, “What is Periodontal Disease?”

What is Periodontal Disease? Let’s Find Out

Periodontal Disease is a disease that attacks the support around each of your teeth. Mainly, this is the gums and bone around the root of the tooth. Periodontal Disease (also known as gum and bone disease) comes from plaque that builds up around your teeth, which is eventually turned into tartar if nothing is done to remove it. When plaque and tartar deposits build up on the roots of the teeth, there is destruction of the bone and gums around the teeth. This leads to deeper pockets that will allow bacteria to live and reproduce in these pockets, making the Periodontal Disease worse. As it worsens, teeth become loosened and gum abscesses set in. Uncontrolled Periodontal Disease can eventually lead to the loss of teeth and bone loss in your jaws.
